Vietnamese authorities have arrested at least four people this week, accusing them of attempting to sabotage national security leading up to the country’s national day on Sunday, Channel News Asia reports, quoting a local state media. The one-party communist state frequently jails and convicts critics, especially since a hardline administration took power in 2016. Vietnam’s repression of human rights and democracy activists increased significantly in 2017, Human Rights Watch said in its World Report 2018. Despite this, most of Vietnam’s donors continued to prioritize trade over rights. On April, six prominent Vietnamese activists received heavy prison sentences on charges of “attempting to overthrow” the country’s communist government.
