Vietnam achieves record presence in world's most influential university rankings

VNExpress-June 13

Thirteen universities in Vietnam have made it to the 2024 University Impact Rankings by U.K. magazine Times Higher Education (THE), an increase of four compared to last year and the highest number ever. The newspaper rolled out this year’s Impact Rankings on Wednesday after evaluating more than 2,150 schools in 125 countries and territories. This marks the sixth time it has composed this ranking to evaluate universities in implementing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation. Nguyen Tat Thanh University in Ho Chi Minh City has the highest ranking in Vietnam and is placed in the group of 301-400. This is also the first time this school has appeared in the Impact Rankings. Three other schools that also broke into the ranking for the first time are HCMC’s Van Lang University (in 801-1,000 group), Lac Hong University in HCMC’s neighbor province of Dong Nai (1,001-1,500), and Vietnamese–German University (1,501+) in Binh Duong Province, another HCMC’s neighbor. The remaining nine representatives of Vietnam are those that have been listed at least once. Among them, six schools are in the top 401-600: Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Duy Tan University in Da Nang City, FPT University (headquartered in Hanoi), National Economics University in Hanoi, Ton Duc Thang University in HCMC, and HCMC University of Economics. In Southeast Asia, the countries with the most ranked schools are Thailand (77), the Philippines (56), Indonesia (45), and Malaysia (28).
