Myanmar’s ultra-nationalist monk U Par Mauk Kha was released from prison on Friday after serving time for inciting unrest in an anti-Rohingya protest in 2016, a rare punishment handed to one of the country’s hardline Buddhist clergymen. The monk, who is from a Magwe monastery, was prosecuted for statements causing public mischief and being a leader of the protest at the US embassy on April 28, 2017. Earlier in the month, he was also sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for violating the peaceful assembly act. Myanmar’s religious affairs minister has asked the country’s highest Buddhist regulatory council to let the government take action against wayward, unruly monks and novices in a bid to rein in clergymen who stir up trouble in the Buddhist-majority country.
