I grew up in Sabah where there were a lot of immigrants from around the region seeking perhaps better livelihood prospects there. Among those who came to Sabah to work were the Timorese. At the time we frankly did not quite know whether they were from the eastern or the western part of Timor island, or if they were indeed from the island itself, or were people of similar ethnicity from the neighboring archipelago. They worked hard in all sectors of Sabah’s economy. In fact, they worked so hard that there were anecdotal stories of them having for instance started working in fruits and vegetable orchards and after a while had saved up enough to buy over the orchards from the original owners.
