Washington’s top diplomat on Wednesday said he would not yet push for sanctions against Myanmar over the Rohingya refugee crisis, but he called for an independent investigation into “credible” allegations that soldiers were committing atrocities against the Muslim minority. Myanmar’s army released a report on Monday denying all allegations of rape and killings by security forces, having days earlier replaced the general in charge of the operation that drove more than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh. The US and EU are unlikely to impose new sanctions on Myanmar’s abusive military practices in sight of China’s use of the crisis to score diplomatic points, writes Bertil Litner for Asia Times.
