With the return of student protests, Thailand’s nominally civilian government faces a significant crisis of authority. The 2016 transition from the revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej to his less-popular son Vajiralongkorn dissipated the charismatic aura around the monarchy. The government, dominated by coup-makers and their cronies, is now increasingly exposed as it flounders in the worst economic downturn since the Asian Financial Crisis.
