Thailand’s return to civilian rule has concealed deep political instability, as the monarchy and military obstruct democratic reforms. Legal mechanisms and entrenched elites weaken the government, which led to the dissolution of opposition parties and the senate’s replacement with conservative allies. Repression under lese-majeste laws and occasional violent opposition from non-democratic groups blocks meaningful democratic progress and much-needed economic reforms.
