Thailand wants to work with warring sides in Myanmar to repair a key highway cutting through the conflict-ridden country, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said on 19 September. He seeks to stabilize Thailand’s border areas and ensure trade routes are open after repairing this key Asian Highway, he added. He stated that Thailand needs to negotiate with both the ruling junta and revolutionary forces to repair this highway. Thailand has the support of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional bloc and India in the push to rebuild parts of Asian Highway 1 (AH-1) that have been damaged by recent fighting, Mr. Maris told reporters. Laos, the alternate chair of ASEAN, called for holding a regional forum before the end of this year to settle Myanmar issues. “I don’t think Myanmar’s problems can be addressed militarily, but through constructive dialogue,” Mr. Maris said. The AH 1 is the key trade route between the two countries with a length of 932 miles connecting Myawaddy on the Thai-Myanmar border and Tamu on the Indo-Myanmar border. The trade value at the Myawaddy border trade post was previously over US$1 billion annually but trade was halted after resistance forces ousted junta troops from Myawaddy earlier this year.
