Key ministers in Thailand’s cabinet, which include Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, came out on Tuesday to confirm there are no plans to further defer the long awaited general elections from Feb 24, The Bangkok Post reports. A total of 37 political parties have registered to contest in the election, and so far the election council has approved the registration of 25 of them, while the remainder will be approved by next week, according to Vietnam Plus. Although the junta has repeatedly vowed to hold elections and then delayed them, there is substantial reason to believe it will actually stick to its 2019 plan, writes Joshua Kurtlantzik for World Politics Review. One of which is the fact that Thailand’s king has given his approval for the last two bills needed for an election, he added.
