Leaders of countries in South-east Asia on Thursday delivered a strong rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to reverse a decades-old American policy and recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Indonesian President Joko Widodo condemned Trump’s decision and called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN) to hold emergency meetings to discuss Trump’s announcement immediately. The announcement, however, could be more symbolic than substantive, the White House warned that any actual move would take years and that the specific boundaries of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem are still subject to peace talks that have bedeviled U.S. presidents for decades.
