The global e-sports industry is projected to generate nearly US$1.6 billion (S$2.2 billion) in revenues globally in 2023, double the US$776 million earned in 2018. Singapore has been ramping up support for professional competitive gaming and has landed several international tournaments. The latest of such events is The International 11 to be held in October, the first time the apex tournament for multiplayer online game Dota 2 – which offered US$40m in prize money last year – is being staged in Southeast Asia. However, on top of the ability to pull off the hosting of international tournaments, observers as well as people in the industry point out much effort is still needed to build up the domestic talent pool in e-sports and make it more attractive as a career option.
