In the late 1960s and 1970s, Singapore’s defence strategy relied on establishing a forward defence perimeter in the southern part of the Malaysian Peninsula. At the time, Singapore’s threat perceptions were shaped by its poor relations with Malaysia and the communist insurgency in Peninsular Malaysia that threatened to topple the Malaysian government.
