Apart from being observed in schools, Racial Harmony Day, which falls today, passes largely unnoticed by most people. July 21, 1964, was the day when the first of two race riots within six weeks took place in Singapore, leading eventually to 36 deaths and injuries to more than 500 people that year. That dark moment etched itself into the memory of that generation, which became acutely aware of the existential need to avoid a repetition of violent racial and religious discord.
