Mr Lee Hsien Loong said managing tensions between wanting social cohesion and bringing in immigrants and foreign talent was “the most difficult” issue he had to handle during his 20-year tenure as prime minister. The Government has rolled out various policies over the years to address Singaporeans’ concerns, but attitudes towards foreign workers do not appear to have shifted much. Yet the need for foreign manpower is all the more critical now as Singapore’s population ages and fertility rate hits record low. This raises the question of what more can be done, including whether there needs to be a starker political message that Singapore cannot thrive without foreign workers. At the same time, Singapore also cannot take for granted its ability to continue attracting such foreign talents in the first place.
