Residents are concerned about the safety of children and the elderly after wild boars were spotted in the vicinity of Zhenghua Nature Park in Bukit Panjang. Mr Edward Chia, Member of Parliament for Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency, said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (March 15) that residents in his ward had sent him videos and pictures of wild boar sightings. The residents are “understandably worried about safety, especially for our children and seniors”, he wrote. He added that officers from the National Parks Board (NParks) had ascertained through closed-circuit television footage that the boars likely entered the estate via a perimeter gate that parkgoers use to enter the park. “As the gate was damaged and left opened, the boars entered,” said Mr Chia.He added that he had met NParks officers who have been on nightly stakeouts for the past three weeks and they told him that there is likely to be one male boar left in the area. Members of the public who encounter a wild boar are advised by NParks to remain calm, keep a safe distance and not provoke the animal. They may call the Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600 to report any wild boar encounters.
