While international linked terror attacks have hit various Southeast Asian nations, Singapore has so far been immune. But as Islamic State (IS) makes deeper inroads into the region, the city state is now on its highest terror threat alert level in years, writes Nile Bowie for Asia Times. Southeast Asian governments have for years highlighted the risk from returning fighters alongside those radicalized at home via the Internet. Those warnings have increased as the Islamic State continues to lose ground in the Middle East, raising concerns it will metastasize and grow more potent in other places. In September, Singapore’s home affairs ministry identified a Singaporean citizen, Megat Shahdan Abdul Samad, appearing on a video allegedly produced by the media wing of the Islamic State.
