A Singapore civil servant was Wednesday fined but escaped jail for leaking confidential information to a journalist, a prosecution that a rights group described as an attempt to spread a “culture of fear”. Previously on Monday, a report released by Facebook revealed that the Singapore government had requested the details of 263 user accounts. The requests included all services under Facebook, including WhatsApp and Instagram. The Singaporean and Malaysian Governments have been accused of using spyware to analyse the digital footprint of its citizens. Singapore has faced criticism from around the world over its censorship laws. This has resulted in discussions on whether the right to freedom of speech and expression even exists in Singapore.
