Singapore’s government is seeking to amend a law that led to shortened sentences for church leaders convicted of misusing millions of dollars, in a case that has gripped the city-state where there is little tolerance for corruption. The co-founder of the City Harvest Church, Kong Hee, was originally sentenced to eight years in jail in October 2015 for criminal breach of trust and falsification of accounts in order to support his wife’s singing career. The High Court reduced that sentence last April to three-and-a-half years. The church engaged US rapper Wyclef Jean to produce an album with singles such as China Wine – a song depicting Ms Sun Ho as a Chinese exotic dancer in Jamaica – and Mr Bill, in which she sang about killing her husband. They had little success.
