Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire effective midnight on Monday, as the two neighboring countries now look to resolve their deadly border conflict after days of clashes. The agreement was struck following a meeting between Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet on Monday in Putrajaya, just south of the capital Kuala Lumpur. The meeting was chaired and hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, this year’s ASEAN chair, and co-organized by the United States and supported by China. “Hun Manet and Phumtham have expressed their positions and willingness for immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy,” Anwar said in a livestream joint press conference following the meeting. He went on to say that the ceasefire will be followed by a meeting of Thai and Cambodian regional commanders on Tuesday morning as well as a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) of the two countries on Aug. 4. “As the current chair of ASEAN, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. Malaysia will also consult with fellow ASEAN member states to participate in the observation effort,” Anwar added. The talks came after a long-running border dispute erupted into conflict on Thursday, killing at least 36 people and displaced some 200,000 people from both sides of the Thailand-Cambodia border. It was their deadliest border conflict in more than a decade. Indonesia had been closely monitoring the escalating border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia and following the agreement on the ceasefire, applauded ASEAN chair Malaysia for managing to de-escalate the conflict.
