The pope has reinforced calls for a two-state solution to the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in his traditional Christmas Day message delivered just over two weeks after the US president, Donald Trump, inflamed tensions in the region with his decision to move US embassy to Jerusalem. Trump’s decision was followed by a statement by Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, whom on Sunday said he had given instructions to move the Central American country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The UN General Assembly has decisively backed a resolution effectively calling on the US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
