The postponed 2025 Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections in October will mark the region’s first under its new parliamentary setup. With institutions still fragile and violence increasingly normalized, there is real danger that the elections could turn into a high-stakes contest fought not only through ballots but through bullets. The elections will signal whether peace can be pursued through political institutions or whether armed power remains the only reliable form of leverage. A broader political reckoning is imperative — the unchecked power of private armed groups, uneven delivery of promised socioeconomic support and exclusion of those left out of the peace dividend.
