THE planet’s oceans are not only rising and warming, but also getting too acidic to sustain marine life, according to a report by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. The oceans are one of Earth’s main carbon sinks, along with forests and wetlands. A carbon sink is a natural reservoir that, like a sponge, soaks up and stores the carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fossil fuels.
