A US-based think tank says the multination rivalry in the South China Sea has destroyed nearly 28.3 square kilometers (sq km) of coral reefs, mainly through the building of artificial islands. The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) used satellite imagery in analyzing the effects of island-building activities in the 360-million-hectare waterway.
