According to Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, the country remains in a “delicate situation,” where more transmissible mutations can cause surges in cases that could buckle the health system just like how the Delta variant is affecting cases in Indonesia. “I think we need to be more cautious. It is not costly to err on the side of caution, we have to be consistent in messaging that the risk remains, they (Filipinos) need to follow protocols, giving them wrong messaging may result in lower compliance with minimum health standards,” Abeyasinghe said in an interview with the ABS-CBN News Channel. He added that the country should continue to prepare for the onslaught of the variants and how to improve its response until it has vaccinated “adequate” numbers of people, as the virus continues to evolve.
