More than two people were killed every week on average this year defending their right to land and resources, with the Philippines recording the highest number of casualties amid a government crackdown on rural communities, advocacy group PAN Asia Pacific (PANAP) said. The 2017 Global Peace Index ranked the Philippines 138th among 163 nations included in the report. The country’s peace ranking was the second lowest in the Asia-Pacific region, beating only North Korea which ranked 150th. Eighty eight per cent of the conflicts between communities and companies in Southeast Asia remain unsolved, a report by the Rights and Resources Institute has found. The rate is one of the highest when compared to the rest of the world.
