With Donald Trump’s administration showing no signs of stopping or slowing its aggressive campaign of mass deportations from the United States, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on one of the Philippines’ critical economic lifelines: the remittances from US-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). While there has not yet been a significant number of Filipinos swept up in the US campaign, and while remittances are still reasonably stable, according to the latest data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), given the erratic track record of the current US government, it would be folly to assume those conditions will prevail and not prepare for a drastic economic shock.
