The coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) quarantine in the country could give rise to domestic violence, maternal deaths and unexpected pregnancies, according to a study led by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The study, conducted with the University of the Philippines Population Institute, found that for every month of the community quarantine until December 2020, there would be 79,000 more unexpected pregnancies, 12,100 women experiencing intimate partner violence and 60 maternal deaths. The study also sees 218,000 Filipino women aged 15 to 49 not having access to family planning services. Prof. Maria Paz Marquez of the UP Population Institute said the pandemic challenged health systems worldwide, including the delivery and access of family planning and maternal and newborn health services.
