The nationwide survey revealed that 45 percent of the 1,200 respondents believe that being married is not necessary before living together, while 40 percent agree that couples should get married first before living together. The remaining 15 percent were undecided over the question: “Should couples get married first before living together; and not engage in a common-law partnership arrangement?” Among the respondents ages 61 and older, 61 percent believe couples should get married first; 33 percent said being married is not necessary; and 6 percent were undecided. Among respondents ages 40 to 60 years old, 48 percent said couples should marry first before living together; 29 percent said being married is not necessary; and 23 percent were undecided. Among young adults (21-39 years old), 21 percent said couples should be married first; 58 percent said being married is not necessary; and 21 percent were undecided.Among teens (13-20 years old), 34 percent said couples should get married first; 51 percent said being married is not necessary; and 15 percent were undecided.
