THE Department of Health (DoH) has strongly advised devotees to avoid inflicting harm on themselves during Holy Week, such as crucifixion and self-flagellation, to prevent possible infection caused by open wounds. It also reminded those who will attend in-person masses to avoid kissing or touching religious statues as the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) continues to linger in the country. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergiere said that while many people have kept their vows during Holy Week, people should be reminded that physical acts of penance may cause bacterial infections such as tetanus. “(The DoH is not recommending the crucifixion. We understand how they want to profess their faith but this can cause harm to a person),” Vergeire said during a briefing last week. Infectious diseases specialist Dr. Edsel Maurice Salvana added that crucifying one’s self on the cross or self-flagellation may cause trauma and injuries to vital arteries, nerves, and veins that could cause permanent damage. Vergeire also urged churches to limit the activity of kissing religious idols as it may cause droplet transmission of diseases such as Covid-19. “(This could transmit the virus, so we request to our churches to not implement this at the moment),” Vergeire said.
