Myanmar, in its third year under military rule, has experienced socioeconomic hardship due to intensified conflict, macroeconomic instability and natural disasters. The UN predicted a third of the population to be in humanitarian need in 2024. A significant factor is the armed deadlock between the military junta and resistance forces notably affecting trade with China and increasing military spending. Meanwhile, civilian sectors such as health and education suffer, the local currency depreciates, infrastructures are attacked and school children are unable to access education due to COVID-19, the military takeover and the dire economic situation.
