The 2021 military coup has devastated Myanmar’s education system through widespread violence and school closures. As the junta loses territorial control, the National Unity Government and Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations are establishing alternative schools that promote multilingual education and local autonomy. This parallel system reflects deeper conflicts over Myanmar’s identity and governance.
