Myanmar’s ongoing crisis pits the State Administrative Council (SAC), which seized power in 2021, against the National Unity Government (NUG) formed by ousted lawmakers. The SAC maintains military and institutional control but lacks de jure legitimacy, seeking to use the upcoming general election to secure recognition. The NUG maintains popular support yet remains fragmented and mostly in exile. ASEAN has shifted towards cautious engagement with both sides, while global powers remain split. The struggle’s outcome hinges on whether the NUG can transform sympathy into genuine de facto authority.
