Myanmar refugees detained at Imphal Prison in Manipur, India, are in urgent need of medical assistance, according to their families. Detained for lacking legal residency documents, these refugees have reportedly served their sentences but remain confined under difficult conditions with limited healthcare access. Many of the Myanmar refugees, relying on nutritionally inadequate prison-provided meals, are facing deteriorating physical and mental health. Family members state that elderly and chronically ill detainees are especially impacted by the lack of sufficient healthcare. India for Myanmar, a New Delhi-based group advocating for human rights and democracy in Myanmar, issued a public appeal on 3 November on behalf of U Aung Min, who is scheduled for surgery on 8 November, urging the Indian government to ensure his medical needs are met. This call to action follows a prior incident on 25 February 2023, when 32-year-old refugee Ko Dem Kholun died from a heart attack while in custody. Myanmar refugees in Indian detention have staged hunger strikes to protest their prolonged confinement. However, authorities in India and Manipur have continued to hold them, citing a lack of arrangements with Myanmar to facilitate their release. Read more at:
