Myanmar’s president called on Independence Day on Thursday for reform of a military-drafted constitution and for justice for all recognised minorities under a federal system, but made no mention of the treatment of its Rohingya Muslim people. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein hinted that Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi may face charges of genocide in the future. He said the scale of the operation against the Rohingya Muslims indicated the involvement of senior members of the government. In Myanmar, where about 870,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee to Bangladesh and up to 10,000 people have been killed so far, their government has not only failed to protect them. It also appears directly culpable, writes Simon Tisdall for The Guardian.
