A total of 4,982 battles have erupted in Myanmar since the 1 February 2021 coup up until 6 August 2024, according to data from the BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor (BNI-MPM). The conflicts have spread across 222 of the country’s 330 townships, covering 67% of Myanmar, as stated by BNI-MPM during a news brief released on 16 August, coinciding with the launch of their book “Deciphering Myanmar’s Peace Process – A Reference Guide (2023-2024)”. “In the months and years following the coup, we’ve witnessed the war spreading across the country,” said BNI coordinator Ko Hnin Ko. He also addressed that BNI has compiled data on the number of fatalities resulting from the battles. BNI’s statistics reveal that nearly 20,000 people lost their lives in the fighting from the day of the coup to 31 March, 2024. The fatalities include 14,736 junta soldiers, 1,058 members of the People’s Defense Forces, and 3,872 civilians. Of the civilian deaths, 45% were the result of intentional killings, while 18% were caused by airstrikes, the second highest cause of civilian casualties. Additionally, BNI’s data indicates that as of 6 August, 2024, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Myanmar has surpassed 3.16 million (3,164,570 people).
