Nearly 30 non-governmental organisations are seeking to amend the country’s prostitution law to make it more responsive to the needs of sex workers, one of the groups’ leaders said. Daw Hnin Hnin Yu, chair of the Taw Win Khayay Foundation, which helps female sex workers, said the Suppression of Prostitution Act 1949 makes  sex workers more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. “The law is archaic and needs to be updated,” she said, adding that civic groups are interviewing more than 50,000 female sex workers across the country to get their input.
