Myanmar’s junta is concentrating on port development and anti-smuggling operations as key elements of its economic strategy, according to recent reports in the Global New Light of Myanmar. In Mon State, Chief Minister U Zaw Lin Tun toured the Puma Power International Port Terminal in Mudon Township. He reportedly emphasized improving operational efficiency and integrating the facility into the country’s regional trade network. The inspection highlighted efforts to improve infrastructure along the Gulf of Martaban and strengthen junta control over private port concessions. The junta officials accompanying the chief minister were reported as stressing how reliable port logistics are essential to developing export revenues and ensuring a steady flow of fuel and industrial goods. On the same day, state media reported stepped-up crackdowns on illegal trade across border regions. Junta officials said warehouses and checkpoints were demolished at various points along the Thaungyin (Moei) River in Myawaddy Township, Karen State. The move is part of a seven-day enforcement campaign which seized contraband valued at more than 1.68 billion kyat (US$799,680). The drive, conducted under the direction of the junta’s Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee, is aimed at cutting losses in state revenue and reducing cross-border trade outside the junta’s control. Junta efforts to develop maritime infrastructure and bring border trade gates under more direct control reflect efforts to rebuild effective economic management and fiscal control while continuing to deal with the ongoing armed conflict and political crisis. In addition to potential for enhancing revenue generation for the junta, the moves are a show of administrative capacity in spite of tightening sanctions and a shrinking formal economy.
