Myanmar’s Military Council leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has threatened to take necessary actions to launch military counteroffensives aimed at regaining territories lost to anti-junta forces. Civilians in areas controlled by revolutionary forces are increasingly fearful of airstrikes. During a meeting with Shan State officials on 3 September in Taunggyi town, Min Aung Hlaing reportedly stated, “People living in towns and villages seized by anti-junta forces must be cautious not to be exploited and should remain vigilant as the military will respond as needed, depending on the situation and information available.” This statement was reported by junta-controlled media. Following Min Aung Hlaing’s remarks, the Military Council carried out airstrikes on civilian areas in Namhkam, Nan Mae Khon, and Lashio towns under the control of revolutionary forces. Local residents expressed their mounting fear of further airstrikes.The military launched airstrikes in Lashio Township for two consecutive days following the junta leader’s statement. The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) has established civil administrative structures in Lashio Township. A resident of Lashio commented that the junta’s actions would only incur public anger. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which has set up an administrative system in Nawnghkio Township, and the Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MDY-PDF) distributed leaflets warning locals about the risk of airstrikes.
