Mizzima-Nov 17
Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing has bestowed honorary service medals on several businessmen, including Shwe Byain Phyu Group chairman U Thein Win Zaw, a figure linked to the Military Commission, the commission announced on November 14. The Military Commission said that U Thein Win Zaw, chairman of Shwe Byain Phyu Group and Atom Myanmar Limited; U Ohn Kyaw, chairman of Max Myanmar Group of Companies; U Kyaw Win, chairman of Shwe Than Lwin Company and a close associate of the commission; A Bank chairman U Ar Yu; and UAB Bank Foundation chairman U Nay Aung have received the Excellent Performance for Social Field (First Class), a top-tier honorary service award. Other medal recipients include Dr. Saw Nay Nwe, vice chairman of the Pacific AA Foundation; U Than Htike San, managing director of the Amarapura Urban Development Project; and Daw Han Su Khaing, a director of Myanmar Apex Bank.
The Military Commission said in a statement that the honorary titles and medals were presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the nation, contributed to national defense and security, and carried out their duties with notable expertise. U Thein Win Zaw, chairman of Shwe Byain Phyu Group and a recipient of the Military Leader’s Medal of Honor, is listed among the “dishonored persons over 30” identified by the advocacy group Justice for Myanmar (JFM). JFM reported in September 2023 that he has long maintained vested interests in the Myanmar Military Commission, and that his loyalty — coupled with his disregard for the commission’s atrocities — has enabled more than 30 of his companies in Myanmar and Singapore to secure lucrative contracts in the logging, jade, mining and oil sectors. The Canadian government sanctioned Shwe Byain Phyu Group following the coup, while the United States imposed sanctions in late January 2024 on U Thein Win Zaw, his wife Daw Tin Latt Min, his son Ko Win Paing Kyaw, and his daughter Ma Theint Win Htet.
