The government will seek the approval of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Assembly of the Union) to adopt an international treaty that will compel the country to stop the use of child labor. U Thein Swe, minister of Labor, Immigration and Population, told the assembly on Tuesday about the salient points of the Minimum Age Convention (138) of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which includes the abolition of child labor.  “The convention has 18 articles and aims to effectively abolish child labor, support economic development, and provide job opportunities consistent with the fullest physical and mental development of young people,” he told the joint parliament. The treaty has been in effect since 1976.
