Under the banner of the Global Actions Against China’s Meddling in Myanmar (GAACM) campaign, demonstrations against China’s interference in Myanmar took place in multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. According to campaign organizer Daw Khin Thiri Nandar Soe, the initiative aims to pressure China to halt its support for Myanmar’s military junta and hold the regime accountable for crimes against humanity. The GAACM campaign seeks to stop China from encouraging the junta’s acts of violence and to build a stronger, peaceful relationship between Myanmar and China.
“We urge China to respect Myanmar’s sovereignty and the will of its people. The Chinese government should reconsider its policies and support Myanmar’s people,” said Daw Khin Thiri Nandar Soe. Highlighting the importance of collective action, she emphasized that grassroots movements like GAACM are essential for paving the way toward a free and peaceful Myanmar. On December 7, protests as part of the campaign were held in cities such as San Francisco, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and Fort Wayne in the United States, as well as in Canada and Australia. Speaking at a demonstration in San Francisco, U Ko Ko Lay, a leader of the GAACM campaign, clarified the movement’s stance: “We are not against the Chinese Communist Party or China itself. We are against Xi Jinping’s policy. His alignment with the military junta has emboldened a criminal like Min Aung Hlaing and ignored the will of the Myanmar people.”
The GAACM campaign also called for China to engage constructively with Myanmar’s pro-democracy forces, including the National Unity Government (NUG) and ethnic organizations. Read more at:
