Mizzima-Sept 25

Fuel shortages are occurring again in Yangon with queues at filling stations beginning from 21 September. Drivers in these queues say they can get only a limited amount of fuel from the filling stations and the price has risen. The current price of fuel for Ron 92 petrol is 3,069 Kyats per litre, Ron 95 petrol is 3,215 Kyats per liter. and premium diesel is 3,235 Kyats per liter. After seeing long queues at some filling stations in Yangon, the junta’s Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) announced they would sell US$30 million to fuel importers. Myanmar has faced similar severe fuel shortages four times in 2024, including this time. Fuel shortages have recurred every two months, getting worse each time. Most of the gas stations dried up in August this year, which is happening this time too. Some taxi drivers said that some gas stations have currently closed their shops. The ruling junta has not been able to resolve the fuel shortage crisis across the country even after nearly two months. Motorists are unable to buy as much fuel as they want and gas stations in most of the townships have dried up, they said. The Military Council has a plan to distribute fuel through a ration system by issuing smart cards but the details are not yet available for how they will sell the fuel and at what prices.
