The number of people killed in a junta airstrike on Mawchi town, Hpasawng Township, Karenni State, has risen to 31, with six others wounded, according to the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State. “Some of the injured have since died. We believe the others will survive. The search has now ended. Some bodies were dismembered, making identification impossible,” said U Banyar Khun Aung, Secretary 2 of the IEC. Rescue teams initially recovered 25 bodies on 18 August, but as searches continued and some of the injured succumbed to their wounds, the confirmed death toll increased to 31 by afternoon—22 men and nine women. The victims included children as young as five and elderly residents. The attack struck Ward No. 16 in Mawchi around noon on 17 August, devastating the densely populated neighborhood. The injured have been named as Naw Lwe Khar, Thet Paing Oo, Kyaw Zinn Moe Oo, Ko Nge, and U Phyo Zaw. Although no clashes were reported in the township, the military has repeatedly carried out air raids on Mawchi. The 17 August assault marked the deadliest to date. Earlier that morning, the junta also bombed a public hospital in Lokhalo village, injuring two civilians and damaging the facility.
