Political prisoners involved in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in Monywa Prison, Sagaing Region, are facing pressure from prison authorities to submit petitions, reported the Political Prisoners Network-Myanmar (PPNM). Since mid-September, prison authorities under the control of the junta have been coercing detained CDM-affiliated political prisoners to sign petitions, which include renouncing their participation in the CDM and requesting their names be removed from the CDM list. Authorities have suggested that signing the petitions could lead to their release and have urged them to consider their families. Monywa Prison holds around 800 inmates, including political prisoners such as Ko Wai Moe Naing, leader of the Monywa People’s Strike Committee, as reported by prisoner support organizations. In June and July 2021, the junta released some detained CDM members after obtaining pledges of loyalty. Since the junta took power, 27,513 individuals have been arrested, with 21,017 still in detention and 9,481 sentenced to prison, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
