Buddhist Monk Accused of Kidnapping Men for Myanmar Military Service

Irrawaddy-Oct 6

A Buddhist monk is leading a junta-aligned Pyu Saw Htee militia unit in the Sagaing Hills, working hand in hand with junta troops to forcibly conscript young men, according to residents. U Waiponla, a monk based in Htut Khaung village, is overseeing the abduction of young men for military service in Sagaing town, locals say. The abductions are being conducted with help from the 33rd Light Infantry Division stationed in the town, with operations on the ground led by U Waiponla’s disciple, Saw Pyae Chan Thar. Witnesses said the groups raid neighborhoods and drag young men from their homes, while firing multiple warning shots. “They take people to Waiponla Monastery and demand ransoms,” one Sagaing resident told The Irrawaddy. “If the families can’t pay at least 5 or 6 million kyat [US$ 2,400-2,850], the youths are sent straight to the army. They are literally selling people.” Residents estimate that more than 50 young men were seized in the last week of September alone. Only a handful with close ties to the military or local administration were released. The abduction squads are targeting internally displaced people (IDPs) in monasteries and wards. Locals say the Pyu Saw Htee militia now numbers over a thousand members in Sagaing. Read more at: https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/burma/buddhist-monk-accused-of-kidnapping-men-for-myanmar-military-service.html
