      The majority of annual commemorations in Myanmar do not necessarily bring back happy memories. Unfortunately, most of the anniversary events here are about remembering the bad old days, like August 8, 1988, when student-organized protests against the government began in Yangon. The protests, which spread across the city, ended in military response and bloodshed.  Some say that day is the second most significant day in the recent Myanmar political history, the greater revolutionary day being the 1300 (Burmese Era, circa 1938) national labor and general boycott against the colonial British rulers, which marked the very first step of organized defiance that led to the independence.
