Mizzima-Sept 7
On 03 September, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun spoke at the UNICEF Executive Board in New York. He described the violence against children in Myanmar by the military junta, including killings, torture, detention, landmine injuries, and lack of healthcare and education. The text of the Ambassador’s statement is as follows. The crisis in Myanmar has entered into 5 years, and the state of affairs is heartbreaking. The military junta’s campaign of terror against the people of Myanmar including children is unabated and continues persistently. Children bear the brunt of the crisis, and their situation is dire. The UN OHCHR has reported that in 2024 alone, at least 248 children were killed by the military, part of an unprecedented civilian death toll. The UN’s “list of shame” included Myanmar military for committing the five grave violations against children in armed conflict. Over 2,799 grave violations against 2,093 children and the recruitment and use of 1,171 children have been verified by the UN, with the true number likely far higher. Children are also the primary victims of the pervasive use of landmines and explosive ordnance. Children are also suffering from shortages of food, clean water, and healthcare amid displacement. Over 1 million children are classified as “zero-dose,” having missed vital immunizations, leaving them vulnerable to deadly, preventable diseases. Read more at:
