Between February and July 2025, the Myanmar junta carried out airstrikes in 123 townships and cut internet access in over 90 per cent of them, according to a new report released by the Myanmar Internet Project (MIP).
The findings were detailed in the report “Communication Blackouts During Airstrikes,” released on October 2, which highlights the impact of airstrikes and communication disruptions on civilians. According to MIP, 645 airstrikes were conducted across 123 townships in every state and division except Yangon, with only 19 days free of airstrikes during the six-month period. Of the 123 townships targeted by airstrikes, 115—around 93.5 percent—experienced communication blackouts. Townships in Sagaing Region, Shan State, and Rakhine State were among the hardest hit by airstrikes. The military regime has reportedly threatened to launch airstrikes on townships experiencing internet outages and suspected of maintaining contact with rebel forces, according to MIP. At least 1,000 civilians have been killed in the airstrikes, with over 96 percent of the deaths occurring in areas where communication was cut off, according to MIP. The MIP report also revealed that the military commission’s airstrikes have destroyed thousands of civilian homes and damaged 83 religious buildings, at least 50 schools, and 19 hospitals and clinics. Myanmar ranks second worldwide for internet shutdowns, with 13 of its 14 states and regions experiencing disruptions, the National Unity Government (NUG) reported in June 2024.
