Two Malaysian artists have raised uncomfortable questions against the government in recent days, a rare move as local performers critical of the government often fear they would be sidelined from television appearances and from government functions. Popular singer Sheila Majid caught the attention of netizens today when she lamented the high cost of living and the weak ringgit in a post on Twitter, sparking a heated debate. Just last week, actress Nur Fathia Latiff questioned Putrajaya’s wisdom in pursuing former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over Bank Negara’s forex scandal. Many consider the case against Mahathir as nothing but a political witch hunt to prevent him from becoming a prime minister candidate in the coming election.
