Malaysian authorities are frantically looking for a 23kg Radioactive Dispersal Device (RDD) that is missing since Aug 10, an exclusive report from The New Straits Times reveals. The device, an Industrial Radiography Equipment, contains the radioactive isotope Iridium- 192, which emits beta and gamma radiation as it decays during its estimated half life of 73 days. Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman told reporters that suspects have been apprehended and that the public should not worry about their safety. He also noted that the police have not yet to determine the motive of the crime. Fears are growing that fighters from the Islamic State (IS) group may attempt to build bombs using radioactive materials. This concern is especially real as the Malaysian police have recorded no less than 20 cases involving radioactive and nuclear materials which have “gone missing” over recent years, according to Today Online.
